NORMAN, Okla. – UT Arlington head men's tennis team will kick off their spring campaign on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. against Oklahoma inside the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Mavs return four players from last season –
Andres Medus,
Meethre Barot,
Pedro Sasso and
Yazid Lahjomri – from last year's team that won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) regular season and tournament championships before advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Medus earned All-WAC First Singles Team honors while Barot earned All-WAC Second Singles Team honors last season.
A pair of newcomers joined UTA in the fall in transfer Daniel Pérez-Caraballo and freshman
Ian Uraga. The Mavs then added another pair of newcomers earlier this month in
Mattia Ricci and
Federico Garbero.
This will be the second season in a row that the Mavs open the spring slate in Norman and the fifth time in the last five years the Mavs battle the Sooners. Their last matchup came in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last season. UTA holds a 3-9 overall record and a 2-7 record in Norman against the Sooners.
Following this weekend, the Mavs will open their home slate on Wednesday, Jan. 22, when they host Pepperdine. The game, originally scheduled to take place at the UTA Tennis Center will now be held at indoor courts at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on the campus of SMU due to the projected bad weather heading towards North Texas.
