Lady Mavs Come Up Short Against Colorado in Game 1 from Hawaii

LAIE, Hawaii – The UT Arlington women's basketball team got a 24-point showing from the bench, but fell 71-60 to the Colorado Buffaloes at the George Q. Cannon Activities Center on Saturday night.
 
The Lady Mavs had three players score in double figures, led by Nya Threatt, who had 14 points and four assists. Kali Haizlip added 14 points off the bench and Kira Reynolds chipped in with 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
 
UTA cleaned up on the glass, collecting 32 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Colorado's 31, led by Kira Reynolds' eight boards.
 
The Lady Mavs defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 14 Colorado turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Jadyn Atchison led the way individually for the Lady Mavs with two steals.
 
GAME FLOW
The Lady Mavs got the scoring started out the gate with a three-pointer from Mila Reynolds on the assist from Kira Reynolds to give UTA the early 3-0 lead. Colorado would go on to take the lead, 4-3 with 5:36 left to go in the first before UTA would tie it at four apiece. The Buffs would go on a 4-0 run to go up four, 8-4 with 3:38 left to go in the quarter. The Lady Mavs would go on their own 5-0 run to go up by one, 9-8, jump-started by a three-pointer from Kali Haizlip. Colorado would reclaim the lead on a layup before another three from Haizlip put the Lady Mavs back up by two, 12-10. Colorado with tie the game back up on a made layup with 29 seconds left in the quarter and we would head into the second tied up, 12-12.
 
Colorado would begin the second quarter with an 8-2 run to give them their largest lead of the half, 20-14. UTA managed to pull within one with a little over a minute left in the half, making it 24-23 behind a made layup from Jeanne Rodriguez, drawing the foul and going to the line where she missed the and one. The Buffs would go back up by three, 26-23, behind a jumper. UTA would get it back to one, 26-25, behind two made free throws from Kira Reynolds. Colorado would record the final basket of the half to go back up by three and send us to the locker room down 28-25.
 
Haizlip led the Lady Mavs with eight points on 3-for-4 shooting from the field, 2-for-3 from deep, in the first half. Kira Reynolds had a team-high four rebounds through two quarters of play. As a team, the Lady Mavs had 12 turnovers through two quarters compared to Colorado's nine turnovers through two as a team.
 
The Lady Mavs would take their first lead since the first quarter, 33-30, with 7:32 left in the third quarter behind a three-pointer from Mila Reynolds, her second of the game. A 7-0 run from Colorado put the Buffs up seven, 41-34 with 3:40 left in the third.
 
UTA could not pull any closer in the fourth, despite it being their best scoring quarter of the game, losing by a final of 71-60. The Lady Mavs got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring eight of its 19 total points.
 
GAME NOTES

  • The Lady Mavs shot well from three point range, knocking down six of 15 long range attempts.
  • The UTA bench continued their consistent play, adding 24 points to its scoring output.
  • The Lady Mavs outrebounded Colorado 32-31.
  • The UTA defense forced 14 turnovers.
  • The Lady Mavs were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team, their fourth time this season recording five or more blocks in a game.
  • Threatt and Haizlip led the Lady Mavs with 14 points each.
  • UTA got a team-high eight rebounds from Kira Reynolds.
  • The Lady Mavs held Colorado to 0-9 shooting from deep.
  • UTA outshot Colorado from the floor (42.2-percent compared to 40.4-percent) and from deep (40.0-percent compared to 0.0-percent).
  • The Lady Mavs connected on 61.5-percent (16-for-26) from the charity stripe.

 
NEXT UP
The Lady Mavs will have a day off before returning to action on Monday, Nov. 24, when they take on in-state foe Texas A&M for game two of the North Shore Hawaii Showcase. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. CT from the George Q. Cannon Activities Center on the island of O'ahu.
