ARLINGTON, Texas --The UT Arlington Mavericks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 7-4 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday.
Sophomore Nicholas Robb (1-0) got the win for UT Arlington (2-0). The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out one. Junior Aaron Calhoun also pitched well, going 2.1 shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.
Offensively, the Mavericks were paced by sophomore Xander McAfee, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Senior Tyce Armstrong compiled a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Junior Jake Martinez also chipped in for UT Arlington, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. UT Arlington managed to push across two runs in the inning.
The Roadrunners failed to push any runs across before the Mavericks offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The UT Arlington offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Armstrong, which brought the score to 6-0 in favor of the Mavericks.
UTSA narrowed UT Arlington's lead to 6-2 before the Mavericks stretched the advantage to 7-2 in the sixth inning. The Mavericks notched a run on McAfee's one-out solo home run off the Roadrunners. UTSA put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but UT Arlington still held on for the 7-4 win.
