Lafayette, La. – The UT Arlington men's tennis team (0-4) is set for their first spring tournament with three upcoming matches in the Cajun Winter Classic hosted by the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana from Friday, Feb. 7, through Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Cajun Courts.
The Mavericks have two matches scheduled for Friday when they take on Tyler Junior College at 9 a.m. and Southern Arkansas at 2 p.m. The lone match on Saturday for the Mavs is against host Louisiana at 9 a.m.
The Mavs are searching for their first win of the Spring 2025 campaign, coming off back-to-back close losses against New Mexico and in state rival UTSA. UTA dropped both matches 4-3. The Mavs were highlighted by strong doubles play against the Lobos, picking up the doubles point, and singles wins by
Andres Medus and Ricci Mattia. Against the Roadrunners, the Mavs dropped the doubles point but picked up wins on Court 3 by
Pedro Sasso, Court 4 by Mattia and Court 6 by Daniel Pérez-Caraballo.
SCOUTING TYLER JUNIOR COLLEGE
This will be the Apache's first match of the Spring 2025 season, after playing at UT Tyler in an exhibition earlier this month. This will be the third overall matchup between the two programs with the first coming way back in 1998 and as recently as 2024. The Mavs hold a 2-0 overall record against the Apache.
SCOUTING SOUTHERN ARKANSAS
The Mulerider's of Southern Arkansas begin their 2025 spring season at the Cajun Winter Classic with their second match coming against the Mavs. Southern Arkansas returns five players from last year's squad while adding five newcomers. This will be the sixth overall matchup between the two programs with UTA holding a 3-2 edge. The two first met all the way back in 1989 and most recently in 2022 with the Mavs falling in a close 3-4 battle.
SCOUTING LOUSIANA
The Ragin' Cajuns carry a 1-3 overall record into the weekend, with their lone victory coming against UT Tyler 5-2 last Saturday. Louisiana opened the season with a doubleheader at Central Florida. UCF won the first match 6-1 and the second match 5-2. The Ragin' Cajuns third match of the season was a 7-0 loss to LSU in Baton Rouge. The two programs are familiar with each other going back to UTA's days in the Sun Belt Conference, with the Mavs holding a 9-12 overall record against Louisiana. The last time the two met was in 2022 at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament where the Mavs knocked off the Ragin' Cajuns 4-2 to move on the SBC Semifinals.
