UTA Picks Up DH Sweep Over PVAMU

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team improved its overall record to 10-8 after back-to-back wins over Prairie View A&M on Saturday, Mar. 1 on the final day of the Maverick Invitational.

GAME 1 | UT Arlington 7, Prairie View A&M 2
The Mavericks took a 5-1 lead in the second inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 7-2 win against the Panthers on Saturday.

Senior Emilie Hoelscher (3-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for UT Arlington (9-8). The left-hander went 2.1 shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing one walk and striking out two.

Offensively, the Mavericks were paced by freshman Talia Maldonado, who went 1-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Junior Elizabeth Baylor furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 2-3 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Kailee Bautista also chipped in for UTA, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, two walks and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the second inning. UTA hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring five runs.

The Mavericks then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fifth inning after the Panthers cut it to 5-2. The Mavs managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the Mavericks lead to 7-2. The score remained 7-2 for the rest of the game, as UTA coasted to the win.

GAME NOTES

» UT Arlington's highest scoring inning was the second, when it pushed five runs across.
» The Mavericks had control of the rest of the game after jumping ahead of the Panthers 5-1 in the bottom of the second.
» The Mavericks out-hit the Panthers at a 9-4 clip.
» UT Arlington pitchers faced 30 Prairie View A&M hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and 10 fly balls while striking out three.
» The Mavericks drew four walks from Prairie View A&M pitching.
» Maldonado led the Mavericks at the plate, going 1-4 with a home run and two RBI.
» Prairie View A&M was led offensively by junior M. Nunez, who went 2-4.
» Senior M. Martinez led the Panthers pitching staff, throwing 4.2 innings of two-run ball.

GAME 2 | UT Arlington 7, Prairie View A&M 6
The Mavs rallied to score one in the seventh inning and walked it off on freshman Madi McDonnell's solo home run off of senior C. Massey to pick up the 7-6 win over PVAMU.

Senior Jessica Adams (3-2) got the win out of the bullpen for UT Arlington (10-8). The right-hander went one shutout inning without giving up a hit, no walks and striking out one. Senior Emilie Hoelscher started the ballgame and went two shutout innings while allowing three hits, walking none and striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mavericks put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning.

The Panthers then tied the ballgame at three before the Mavericks came back to reclaim their advantage in the fifth inning. UTA scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of junior Marley Neises, scoring freshman Talia Maldonado and freshman Kynlee Bowlin, which brought the Mavericks lead to 6-3.

Prairie View A&M then rallied to tie the ballgame at 6-6 before UTA walked it off in the bottom of the seventh on McDonnell's leadoff home run off of Massey.

» Massey led the Panthers pitching staff, throwing one inning of one-run ball.

UTA will open up conference play at Allan Saxe with Utah Tech. The Mavericks and Trailblazers will face off with a three-game series beginning on Friday, Mar. 7.
