AUSTIN, Texas --The UT Arlington Mavericks got three hits out of senior Tate Bethel in a 7-4 loss to the No. 11 Texas Longhorns Tuesday.
Freshman Tyler Zahradnik (0-1) took the loss on the mound for UT Arlington (4-9). Senior Caden Noah started the ballgame and went one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.
Bethel's three-hit day led the Mavericks offensively. Junior Jake Martinez compiled a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Tyce Armstrong also helped out for UT Arlington, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the third inning. Bethel came across to score the lone run of the inning for UT Arlington and get them on the board.
The Longhorns then scored two runs to retake their advantage heading into the sixth inning, when the Mavericks responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. UT Arlington picked up two runs when a single from Martinez brought home senior Maxwell Mims and Armstrong, which brought the score level at 3-3.
Texas broke that tie and grabbed a 7-3 lead heading into the ninth, when UT Arlington narrowed the gap to 7-4. The Mavericks scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Xander McAfee. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
