STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team sailed to victory, claiming the conference series win over Tarleton following a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, Mar. 15 from Tarleton Softball Complex.
GAME 1 | UT Arlington 6, Tarleton State 5
Sophomore Abi Gutierrez was mowing people down on Saturday, punching out 10 Tarleton hitters over six innings of work to help propel the Mavericks past the Texans 6-5.
In addition to her 10 strikeouts, Gutierrez (4-0) threw six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits and walking two for UTA (14-10).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks were trailing 5-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. UTA scored two runs on solo shots from junior Marley Neises and junior Kailee Bautista.
The Mavs kept the Texans off the board before taking the lead in the sixth. UTA's offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Kaitlyn Sailor, which brought the Mavericks lead to 6-5. The score remained 6-5 for the rest of the game, as UTA held on for the win.

GAME 2 | UT Arlington 3, Tarleton State 2
Freshman Kynlee Bowlin (1-1) started in the circle and picked up the win for UT Arlington (15-10). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out two. Freshman Jaycee Knighton also made an impact in the circle for the Mavericks, throwing two shutout innings while allowing two hits, with no walks and one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the fourth inning. Freshman Madi McDonnell's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for UTA.
The Texans failed to push any runs across before the Mavericks offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. UT Arlington pushed across a run on sophomore Kaitlyn Sailor's two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Mavericks. Tarleton put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but UTA still held on for the 3-2 win.
