MONROE, LA –Sophomore Caylon Dygert and senior Caden Noah each collected seven strikeouts to help propel the UT Arlington Mavericks over the UL Monroe Warhawks 8-2 on Friday.
Sophomore Caylon Dygert (2-2) got the win for UT Arlington (4-6). The right-hander went seven shutout innings, giving up three hits, one walk and striking out seven. Senior Caden Noah also pitched well, going two innings, surrendering two runs, one earned, on one hit, walking one and striking out seven.
Senior Maxwell Mims and sophomore Xander McAfee each collected two extra base hits to lead the offense.
McAfee's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-5 day, and included two doubles and three RBI. Mims made his contribution, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances with a double, a home run, two walks and three RBI, part of a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Senior Tyce Armstrong also contributed for the Mavericks, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. UT Arlington got on the board thanks to McAfee's RBI double with two outs.
The Mavericks then held the Warhawks scoreless before expanding their lead in the sixth inning. UT Arlington scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Mims, scoring Armstrong and junior Xavier Melendez, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Mavericks.
UL Monroe narrowed UT Arlington's lead to 4-1 before the Mavericks stretched the advantage to 8-1 in the ninth inning. The Mavericks bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of McAfee. UL Monroe put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but UT Arlington still coasted to the 8-2 win.
