Mavs Down Texans For Third Straight Win

STEPHENVILLE, Texas --The UT Arlington Mavericks defeated the Tarleton Texans 4-2 for its third-straight win after dropping the previous five. 

Sophomore Caylon Dygert (4-3) started on the mound and picked up the win for UT Arlington (11-19, ). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on seven hits, allowing no walks and striking out seven. Senior Caden Noah also made an impact on the mound for the Mavericks, throwing two shutout innings while allowing one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts.

In the batter's box, the Mavericks were paced by junior Xavier Melendez, who went 1-for-4 on the day with the go-ahead home run and two RBI. Senior Tyce Armstrong furnished a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Xander McAfee also helped out for UT Arlington, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mavericks put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. UT Arlington got an RBI single from freshman Austin Phillips, scoring senior Maxwell Mims from second base.

After the Texans rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Mavericks came back to retake the lead in the sixth inning. UT Arlington picked up a run on Armstrong's two-out solo home run off of junior Aden Lucas, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Mavericks.

Tarleton State clawed back to tie the ballgame at two before UT Arlington reclaimed a 4-2 advantage in the eighth inning behind Melendez's two-run homer to right field. The score remained 4-2 for the rest of the game, as UT Arlington held on for the team's third-straight win.

GAME NOTES
» McAfee had three hits in the game for UT Arlington.
» Dygert struck out seven Texans hitters.
» UTA's highest scoring inning was the eighth, when it pushed two runs across.
» The Mavericks had control of the rest of the game after moving ahead of the Texans 1-0 in the top of the second.
» Dygert put together seven innings of two-run ball for the Mavericks.
» Maverick pitchers limited Tarleton State to just 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
» UT Arlington pitchers faced 34 Tarleton State hitters in the game, allowing 12 ground balls and five fly balls while striking out nine.
» Melendez led the Mavericks at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
