STEPHENVILLE, Texas --Freshman Austin Phillips and freshman Cade Dodson each racked up four hits to help propel the UT Arlington Mavericks over the Tarleton State Texans 14-13 on Sunday.
The win marked the team's first sweep of the season, and extended the Mavs winning streak to five games, the longest since 2023.
Senior Jack Hagan (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for UT Arlington (13-19, ). The right-hander went one shutout inning without giving up a hit.
In addition to his four hits, Dodson had a double, a triple and two RBI to lead the Mavericks. Phillips added a double, a home run and four RBI to his four-hit performance as well. Junior Xavier Melendez also helped out for UT Arlington, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a home run and four RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the third inning. UT Arlington scored twice in the inning, including one on a solo shot from Phillips.
The Texans then tied the ballgame at two before the Mavericks came back to reclaim their advantage in the fourth inning. UT Arlington brought home a pair, with one run driven in by senior Tate Bethel's single, which brought the Mavericks lead to 4-2.
Tarleton State narrowed UT Arlington's lead to 4-3 before the Mavericks stretched the advantage to 12-3 in the sixth inning. The Mavericks hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring eight runs.
The Texans gained ground, closing the gap to 12-7 until UT Arlington added some insurance in the eighth. Dodson crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Mavericks, bringing the UT Arlington advantage to 13-7.
Tarleton State came back to tie the contest at 13 behind six hits in two innings before the Mavericks reclaimed a 14-13 advantage in the tenth inning behind an RBI single off the bat of Phillips. The score remained 14-13 for the rest of the game, as the Mavericks held on for the sweep.

The Mavs return to Clay Gould Ballpark for a four-game home stretch, starting with a midweek matchup versus the Baylor Bears on Tuesday, Apr. 15 at 6 p.m. Then, the Mavs will host the Abilene Christian Wildcats in a conference series from Apr. 17-19.
