ARLINGTON, Texas --The UT Arlington Mavericks took a 4-3 lead into the eighth inning, but could not hang on and fell 7-6 to the Abilene Christian Wildcats Thursday.
Senior Caden Noah (0-3) took the loss on the mound for UT Arlington (13-21, 5-5). Sophomore Caylon Dygert started the ballgame and went six innings, surrendering two runs, both earned, on seven hits, walking three and striking out five.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. UT Arlington scored twice, with one run coming across on senior Tyce Armstrong's single.
The Mavericks then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fifth inning after the Wildcats cut it to 2-1. UT Arlington plated two runs off of Abilene Christian pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of freshman Cade Dodson, which brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Mavericks.
UT Arlington's lead had disappeared by the time the eighth inning arrived and turned into a 5-4 Abilene Christian advantage, when the Mavericks evened up the game at five. The Mavericks scored a run on sophomore Jackson Hill's first career home run off senior Caden Greanead.
The Wildcats busted up the tie and grabbed the lead heading into the ninth inning, when UT Arlington got back on the scoreboard. The Mavericks scored a run on senior Tate Bethel's one-out solo dinger off junior Henry Cone, tightening the Abilene Christian lead to 7-6. The Mavericks were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
