UTA Falls To ACU In Doubleheader

GAME 1 | Abilene Christian 6, UT Arlington 5
ARLINGTON, Texas --An outstanding offensive output was not enough for UT Arlington on Friday. The Mavericks tallied five runs, but could not hold the Abilene Christian Wildcats at bay, and were defeated 6-5.

Sophomore Nicholas Robb (2-4) started and took the loss on the mound for UT Arlington (13-22, 5-6). Junior Aaron Calhoun was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 1.1 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the first inning. UT Arlington got an RBI single from sophomore Xander McAfee, scoring freshman Cade Dodson from third base.

The Mavericks kept the deficit at 2-1 before tying the score in the fifth. UT Arlington scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Tyce Armstrong, which evened the score at 2-2.

Abilene Christian busted up the tie and grabbed a 4-2 lead heading into the seventh, when UT Arlington narrowed the gap to 4-3. The Mavericks scored once on an RBI single off the bat of McAfee.

The Wildcats expanded their lead to 6-3 before the UT Arlington offense got back to work, biting into that lead in the ninth. The Mavericks scored twice on Armstrong's two-run homer, bringing the score to 6-5 in favor of Abilene Christian. The Mavericks were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME 2 | Abilene Christian 11, UT Arlington 5
ARLINGTON, Texas --The Mavs fell to the Wildcats 11-6 in the series finale, dropping the series.

Senior Joe Steeber (3-3) started and took the loss on the mound for UT Arlington (13-23, 5-7). .

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead behind a four-run second inning. The Mavs chipped away scoring two runs in the fourth inning after Austin Phillips scored on a wild pitch and Xander McAfee drove in an RBI.

Thw Wildcats went on to outscore the Mavs 7-2 in the next five innings to sweep the series.

GAME NOTES
» UT Arlington's highest scoring inning was the ninth, when it pushed two runs across.
» Dodson stole two bases in Friday's game.
» UT Arlington went 3-for-9 (.333) with runners in scoring position.
» UT Arlington pitchers faced 42 Abilene Christian hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and 12 fly balls while striking out six.
» The Mavericks drew four walks from Abilene Christian pitching.
» Armstrong led the Mavericks at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
 

ON DECK
The Mavs will head to the desert for a four-game stretch against Arizona opponents. First, the Mavs will take on No. 22 Arizona in Tucson, AZ on Apr. 23. Then, the Mavs head north to Phoenix for a conference series against the GCU Lopes from Apr. 25-27.
