ARLINGTON, Texas --The UT Arlington Mavericks broke through after a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning to defeat the TCU Horned Frogs 6-4 Tuesday. The victory also marked the third-straight season with a victory over the Horned Frogs.
Junior Caden Cline (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for UT Arlington (10-19). The right-hander went one shutout inning without giving up a hit, allowing no walks and striking out two. Senior Jack Hagan also made an impact on the mound for the Mavericks, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing one hit.
Offensively, the Mavericks were paced by sophomore Xander McAfee, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Freshman Cade Dodson compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4. Senior Parker Airhart also contributed for UT Arlington, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the second inning. McAfee put UT Arlington on the board with a leadoff home run off freshman Zack James.
The game remained tied until the very next inning, when the Mavericks got going again on offense. UT Arlington scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Tyce Armstrong, which brought the Mavericks lead to 2-1.
TCU fired back to tie the ballgame at two before UT Arlington reclaimed a 3-2 advantage in the fifth inning. The Mavericks scored once on an RBI single off the bat of McAfee.
The Horned Frogs then tied the game at three before UT Arlington came back to retake their advantage in the seventh inning. bringing the UT Arlington advantage to 6-3. TCU put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Mavericks still held on for the 6-4 win.
