ST. GEORGE, Utah --The UT Arlington Mavericks put together a last-chance comeback, scoring three runs in the ninth inning, but the late-game rally came up short and they fell 9-7 to the Utah Tech Trailblazers Sunday.
Senior Joe Steeber (4-4) started and took the loss on the mound for UT Arlington (18-29, 10-11).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the second inning. UT Arlington got an RBI single from sophomore Caylon Dygert, scoring sophomore Xander McAfee from second base.
The game remained tied until the very next inning, when the Mavericks got going again on offense. UT Arlington brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Dygert's single, which brought the Mavericks lead to 3-1.
UT Arlington's lead had disappeared by the time the sixth inning came around and turned into a 5-3 Utah Tech advantage, when the Mavericks cut that deficit to 5-4. The Mavericks added a run on junior Xavier Melendez's one-out solo home run off junior Ethan Gardner.
The Trailblazers expanded their lead to 9-4 before the UT Arlington offense got back in action, biting into that lead in the ninth. bringing the score to 9-7, drawing five walks, in favor of Utah Tech. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
