SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame announced today its newest members. The Class of 2026 includes former UT Arlington Lady Mavs head coach Donna Capps.
The new members will be inducted during a banquet at the Doubletree By Hilton San Antonio Airport, Saturday, May 9, 2026, in San Antonio at the annual Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) Clinic.
Capps is joined by fellow coach inductees Jeff Bell, Jerry Cassell and Karen Aulenbacher-Heintz. The player inductees include Derrick Daniels, Tai Dillard, Karl Godine and Sara Hinkley.
Capps amassed a career record of 645-292 in her 50-year coaching career, which included 30 years as a head coach on both the high school and collegiate levels.
At the helm of UTA for seven seasons, Capps compiled a 119-89 record, the second most victories for a coach in program history while her .572 winning percentage is also the second best mark in program history. She holds the best winning percentage (.661) and record (82-42) in conference action.
Capps led UTA to its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in either men's or women's basketball in 2005 and led the Lady Mavs back to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. She also coached the first Lady Mav to be named the Southland Conference Player of the Year in Terra Wallace. Capps was also named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year for the 2001-02 season which was just the second time in the conference's history that a coach with a losing record was named the league's coach of the year when she revived the downtrodden program to 12 league wins and a fourth-place finish after a 14-15 record in 2001-02.
With coaching stints at North Mesquite, Mabank, Crandall and Horn high schools, she made the State playoffs in 20 of her 23 years as a head coach, made seven Regional Tournaments, and was a State Tournament Finalist in 1988. She was named District Coach of the Year 12 times, TGCA Coach of the Year in 1988, TABC Coach of the Year in 1988. She is a member of the Mesquite ISD Hall of Honor, as well as the Crandall ISD Hall of Honor. Coach Capps was selected in 2021 as one of the Top 100 Coaches in UIL history.
