COLLEGE STATION, Texas – UT Arlington cross country's regular season is in the books and it has turned out to be a season for the ages for Dorcas Jepkosgei. After breaking her own program record in the 5k at the Chile Pepper Festival in UTA's last meet, the sophomore laid claim to another school record after running the 6k at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in 19 minutes and 25.7 seconds.
Jepkosgei's time smashed her own previous personal-best mark in the 6k of 20:02.5 — set at the 2025 Arturo Barrios Invitational — by almost 40 seconds. The Kenya native beat Matro Jepkemboi's mark of 19:49.2 at the 2023 Arturo Barrios that previously held the record.
The sophomore's time ultimately placed her fifth individually out of a field of over 400 runners. The four runners in front of Jepkosgei are ranked 58th or better in the USTFCCCA Division I Cross Country Rating Index — or XCRI — where Jepkosgei herself ranks 102nd.
Jepkosgei finished second among runners in the South Central Region in the 6k, behind only Arkansas' Isca Chelangat who finished second and is ranked No. 20 on the D-I XCRI. Â
The Kenya native finished in front of four runners ranked in the top 100 of the D-I XCRI: Tulsa's Kathryn Koontz (Ranked No. 98), LSU's Abigael Chemnagei (No. 66) and Edna Chepkemoi (No. 23) and Texas A&M-CC's Elizabeth Khatevi (No. 24).
"She is running to her potential," Head cross country coach John Sauerhage said, "She finished second among all of the best girls in our region. Hopefully her best races are still in front of her this season."
Though Jepkemboi may have had her record broken, she herself turned in a solid performance in the women's 6k. The senior was the second Maverick to finish and 61st runner overall with a time of 20:41.4.
Not far behind Jepkemboi, Connie Ndiema ran in her first collegiate 6k. The Kitale, Kenya native finished just five seconds behind Jepkemboi, clocking a 20:46.3 to finish 68th overall.
Finishing fourth for UTA and continuing her own strong season was Lauren Baur. The senior finished with a time of 21:39.6, beating her previous personal-best time by nearly 40 seconds. Baur has set new personal-best times in all three of UTA's meets this season.
Capping off the UTA lineup is Emilia Mandl. The Malmö, Sweden native clocked a new personal-best time of 21:54.2, the second meet in a row in which she set a new best mark for herself.Â
Sophia Hamdani also competed in the women's 6k, but did not finish.Â
All told, UTA finished 15th on the women's side out of 48 teams that recorded a team score.
In the men's 8k, Toby Eaton and Mateo Doherty once again led the way for the Mavericks. The duo finished back-to-back, Eaton crossing the line in 57th overall and Doherty finishing on his heels in 58th.
The pairing narrowly missed out on going sub-24:00, Eaton finishing in 24:01 and Doherty clocking a 24:01.8. Both marks are personal bests.
Kebede Kerlin set a new personal best of his own, running the 8k in 24:48.1. Kerlin finished third among UTA runners and 142nd overall out of a field of over 370 runners.
Angel Sanchez returned to the lineup after missing the Chile Pepper Invitational. The sophomore finished 174th with a time of 25:05.9.
The final runner that counted towards UTA's team score was Jameson Stewart, who clocked a personal-best time of his own at 25:30.4 and finished in 219th.
A little less than 20 seconds behind Stewart, Lucas Whitt capped off his second collegiate 8k with a time of 25:50.2, an over 40-second improvement on his time in the same event at the Chile Pepper Festival. The freshman finished 257th overall.
Rounding out UTA's lineup were Leo LeGrand and Daniel Armstrong. LeGrand ended up with a time of 26:28.2 — just six tenths of a second off of his time in the 8k at the Chile Pepper Festival.
Armstrong, competing in just his second cross country event as a Maverick and his first since 2024, finished at 27:40.7.
As a team, UTA finished 22nd overall on the men's side out of over 40 teams that competed.
With the regular season in the rearview mirror, UTA now turns its attention to the United Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships. The conference championships take place Oct. 30 in Richmond, Kentucky.
"We'll be ready for the conference championship," Sauerhage said. "It's a huge meet. Hopefully they saw enough competition to bring out their peak performance in a couple of weeks."
