ARLINGTON, TX - The UT Arlington softball team closed the first day of the Maverick Invitational with a split on Friday. The Mavericks fell to Columbia, 5-3, before bouncing back with a 4-1 victory over South Dakota State.
The game remained quiet on both sides through four innings, with each team recording just one hit.
The scoring began in the top of the fifth when South Dakota State's Amanda Vacanti singled to right center to give the Jackrabbits a 1-0 lead. UTA responded in the bottom half of the inning as
Peyton Holland launched a solo home run to left field, tying the game at 1-1. Holland's home run marked her fifth on the season.
UTA took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when
Dee McClarity singled up the middle to drive in
Kaylee Schweitzer, putting the Mavericks ahead 2-1. The Mavericks continued to add on as
Marley Neises singled to left field, bringing home
Camila Spriggs and
Kelsey Creech to extend the lead to 4-1.
UTA held SDSU scoreless in the seventh inning to secure the 4-1 triumph.
