ARLINGTON, TX -- The UT Arlington softball team earned their second win of the Maverick Invitational weekend over South Dakota State, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.
Sophomore Maddie Furniss (4-4) got the win out of the bullpen for UT Arlington (10-14). The right-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out two.
At the plate, the Mavericks were led by junior Peyton Holland, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run and two RBIs. Senior Marley Neises furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Junior Mia McNulty also chipped in for the Mavericks, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding two walks.
The Mavericks were trailing 2-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Holland came across to score the lone run of the inning for UTA and get them on the board.
The Mavericks kept the deficit at 2-1 before taking the lead in the third. UTA's offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run groundout off the bat of Neises, which brought the score to 6-2 in favor of the Mavericks. South Dakota State put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but UT Arlington still held on for the 6-4 win.
