ARLINGTON, Texas – In a tightly contested, back-and-forth battle, the UT Arlington softball team fell 11-8 to California Baptist in game one of the weekend series on Friday afternoon at Allan Saxe.
The Mavericks now move to a 17-20 overall record and a 5-5 record in WAC play.
At the plate, the Mavericks were led by
Peyton Holland, who went 2-for-4, with two home runs and a game-high four RBIs.
Dee McClarity added a 2-for-3 performance with a home run and two RBIs, while
Kelsey Creech also went yard and drove in a run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CBU struck first in the top of the second, as Jordyn Madrigal doubled to left center, driving in two runs to give the Lancers an early 2-0 lead.
UTA answered in a big way in the bottom of the third.
Dee McClarity launched a two-run homer to left, followed by back-to-back home runs from
Peyton Holland and
Kelsey Creech to put the Mavericks in front, 5-4
The Lancers responded in the top of the fourth with a pair of home runs, reclaiming the lead at 6-4.
Holland delivered again in the bottom half of the inning, blasting a three-run homer to swing the momentum back in UTA's favor, 7-6.
UTA added insurance in the fifth when
Vanessa Soza singled to center, bringing home
Kaylee Schweitzer to extend the lead to 8-6
In the top of the sixth, CBU rallied for three runs to tie the game at 8-8 before pushing one more across to regain a 9-8 lead.
California Baptist dropped in two runs off the bat of Makayla Medellin with a single to right field, 11-8, in the top of the seventh. CBU held off UTA in the bottom of the seventh to win game one at 11-8.
