ST. GEORGE, Utah – After trailing by three in the fifth inning, the UT Arlington softball team used a dominant 13-run seventh inning to power past Utah Tech, 15-4, in Game 1 on Friday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.
The Mavericks now move to a 19-21 overall record and a 7-6 record in WAC play.
UTA was led at the plate by freshman
Kaylee Schweitzer who had a standout performance, going 3-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored.
Peyton Holland added a strong showing, finishing 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs, while
Dee McClarity contributed a 2-for-5 effort with two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UTA struck first in the top of the second as
Peyton Holland launched a solo run home run to mark her 11
th homer of the season and putting the Mavericks on the board at 1-0.
UTA was able to hold Utah Tech scoreless up until the bottom of the fourth, when Utah Tech's Kennedy Embrey singled up the middle for an RBI, tying the game at one apiece.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Trailblazers exploded as UTU's Lakaiya-Braessia Kahahawai-Kekona doubled down the line and Sadie Phillips followed with an RBI double to give Utah Tech a three-run lead at 4-1.
In the top of the sixth, Holland sent a sacrifice fly to right field to score
Mallory Stone and cut the deficit in half at 2-4.
Freshman
Kaylee Schweitzer delivered in the top of the seventh, ripping a triple to left field to drive in two runs, scoring
Marley Neises and
Kaitlyn Sailor to give UTA the lead at 5-5. Later,
Mia McNulty added insurance with a two-RBI single to center, plating
Valeria Feeney and
Talia Maldonado to extend the lead to 7-4. Next up, Holland launched her second home run of the day, a two-RBI shot to extend the Mavericks' lead to 9-4. Schweitzer continued her big day in the seventh, delivering her second triple to push UTA's lead to 12-4.
Taylor Minor followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Schweitzer to extend the Mavericks' advantage at 13-4.
Dee McClarity later doubled to right field for two RBI, scoring McNulty and
Kailee Bautista, 15-4.
UTA was able to hold the Trailblazers off, taking game one at 15-4.
