Brownsboro forward Shedera "Shay" Bowman, a Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 3A All-State selection , Temple guard Shondria Combs and Cedar Hill guards Kiarra Shofner and Meghan Nelson signed letter of intent to play for UT Arlington women's basketball recently.
Bowman, a 6-foot-1 two-time All-East Texas first-team pick and the District 15-3A Most Valuable Player both as a junior and senior averaged 13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, three assists and three steals. She was named all-region by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Her Brownsboro Bearettes team finished the year 34-4 and lost to eventual state champion China Springs, 60-48, in the Class 3A state semifinals.
Combs averaged 10.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 7.4 assist and 5.1 steals per game as a senior at Temple High School. A three-sport standout in basketball, softball and track and field, she was named the District 13-5A MVP and Class 5A All-State by the TABC. She was a first team all-district pick as a sophomore and junior and played in 135 consecutive varsity games at Temple High School.
"We are excited about this group," said UTA Head Women's Basketball Coach Donna Capps. "They know the expectations we have here and that is to win championships. I think everyone of them can help us as we continue to build our program. They fit into our style of play well and will give us instant depth and key spots and will have a chance to start immediately."
Shofner earned first-team all-District 7-5A after averaging 13.4 points, 2.0 steals and 2.4 assists per game at Cedar Hill High school. She was named academic all-district, and chosen to the Texas Hoops.com top 100 list. She scored a season-high 24 points against Fort Worth Christian. Shofner received the team's defensive player of the year honor.
Nelson, a 5-8, guard, was a three-time all-District 7-5A choice at Cedar Hill High School. She was named the District 7-5A Offensive MVP and to the all-region team by the TABC after leading the Longhorns in scoring (14.5 ppg), rebounding (4.5 rpg) and steals (2.2 per game). Nelson was named first-team all-district as a junior and was named to the all-tournament teams for the Mansfield Rotary and the End of Oregon Trail tournament.
Bowman, Combs and Shofner join the early signees of guard LaTasha Duffy of Mansfield Summitt High School and Kristina Grace, a 6-3, post from San Antonio MacArthur High School.
