HOUSTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington softball sqaud's eight game winning streak was snapped Wednesday afternoon as The University of Houston handed the Lady Mavericks two losses in non-conference action. The Cougars defeated UTA, 4-1 and 3-0, at the UH Softball Complex.
Neither squad could score in the nightcap until Houston broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth inning as two walks and a single up the middle loaded the bases with one out. The Cougars plated their first run on a sacrifice fly to right by Jeanie Davis and added two more runs on a triple by Kristen Glowacz to take a 3-0 lead.
Freshman Jill Garro took the loss for the Lady Mavs, falling to 6-7 on the year. Jenny Johnson improved to 7-5 on the year. Johnson only allowed one hit and struck out 11.
UTA took an early lead in the first game, plating one run in the top of the first frame. Melanie Williams reached on a two base error by the UH shortstop. Beverly Rowan follwed with a bloop single to plate Williams and give UTA a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fouth inning, Candis Turnbo hit a two run, two out homerun to put the Cougars ahead, 2-1.
Another Cougar homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning made the final margin, 4-1, as Houston snapped the Lady Mavericks eight game winning streak.
Junior Katy Cox was tagged with the loss, falling to 13-4 on the year. Cox struck out six and scattered four hits.
Jamie Falco earned the win for the Cougars. Falco struck out nine and allowed five hits and one run.
Texas-Arlington returns to Southland Conference action this weekend, March 22-23, at Northwestern State. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at the Lady Demon Softball Field.
