ARLINGTON, Texas...After striking out 29 batters in the Lady Mavericks' three game series with Northwestern State this past weekend, junior pitcher Katy Cox became the career softball strikeout leader at The University of Texas at Arlington. Cox entered the weekend with 592 career strikeouts, just 23 shy of the record. Debbie Day struck out 615 batters from 1987-1989 to set the record.
In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Cox tied her career high, striking out 17 batters to bring herself within six of tying the record. The Haltom City native surpassed the record on Sunday, striking out 12 as UTA defeated Northwestern State in the series finale. Cox now owns 621 career strikeouts.
Texas-Arlington returns to action this weekend when it plays host to Texas-San Antonio in a three-game Southland Conference series at Allan Saxe Field. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. The Lady Mavs enter the weekend with a 21-12 overall record and in first place in the SLC with an 11-1 mark.
