ARLINGTON, Texas... Josh Daniel, a senior guard on The University of Texas at Arlington's men's basketball team, has been named to the inaugural NCAA Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete Team. The award is the third major academic award earned by Daniel since February.
The team honors ten players who own a minimum 3.20 grade point average and is a starter or an important reserve for his team. Daniel was one of seven men's basketball players to be named on every selection committee member's ballot. Division I-AAA is comprised of 90 Division I institutions that do not sponsor football. The Division I-AAA Athletics Director's Association is in its second year of existence.
On March 27, the Southland Conference named Daniel as its men's basketball Student-Athlete of the Year. In February, Daniel was named to the Verizon Academic All-Region VI team and appeared on the ballot for the Academic All-American team.
Daniel, a public relations major from Jonesboro, Ark., averaged 5.9 points per game and finished the season second on the SLC assists chart, averaging 4.6 assists per game during the 2002-03 season.
Daniel owns a 3.73 grade point average since coming to UTA last year. Academic awards are nothing new to Daniel, younger brother of UTA assistant coach Matt Daniel. While attending Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains, Josh Daniel earned the National Junior College Athletic Association's highest academic honor in 2001, when the NJCAA awarded him the Distinguished Academic All-American Award. He was also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and graduated from SMS-West Plains with honors.
Daniel was an All-State selection at Jonesboro (Ark.) High School in 1999, and graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
Matt Daniel was an Academic All-Big 8 performer at Colorado in 1995.
