MAVERICKS COMPLETE SWEEP OF COWBOYS 6-3

April 6, 2003

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington got another strong outing from starting pitcher Charlie Coffey as they completed a three-game sweep of McNeese State 6-3 Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Mavericks (21-15, 10-2) got on the board in the first inning without the luxury of a base hit. Ryan Roberts got the rally going by drawing a two-out base on balls. He proceeded to steal second and then steal third as Hunter Pence walked. A wild pitch by MSU starter John Doerfler allowed Roberts to score from third.

The Cowboys (19-14, 4-8) got an equalizer in the third inning as Ran Prince singled back through the box and Tommy Eubanks moved Prince to third on a single through the right side. MSU then executed the double steal allowing Prince to score from third to tie the game.

UTA regained the lead in the home half of the third inning as Dustin Bozarth started the inning by slapping a ball under the glove of the first baseaman and beat the throw from the second baseman to the pitcher covering. After stealing second, Roberts belted a double past the bag at third to score Bozarth.

MSU got another run in the fourth inning as back-to-back singles put runners on the corners. A sacrifice bunt by Derek Bordelon allowed the runner to score from third with the tying run.

The Mavs regained the lead in the fourth as Scott Williams belted a two-out solo home run over the left field wall. Robby Deevers followed with a single back through the box and then stole second. Deevers then stole third as Bozarth walked and scored as catcher Ran Prince threw the ball into left field.

UTA pushed its lead to three runs in the fifth inning as Aaron Batlle led off with a single through the right side and Roberts followed with a single back up the middle. Roberts advanced to second as Batlle was thrown out trying to steal third. After a failed pickoff attempt by reliever Walt Nolen moved Roberts to third. Pence followed with a single to let field.

The Cowboys scored a run in the eighth as Tim Lemke produced an RBI single to left field.

Coffey (4-1) picked up the win by allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work. John Doerfler (4-3) took the loss by allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits in four innings of work. Mike Snapp picked up his second save of the series by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Roberts, Bozarth and Deevers each collected two hits for UTA. Roberts also scored two runs on the day.

The Mavericks return to action on Tuesday evening as they welcome the No. 10 Baylor Bears to Clay Gould Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
