ARLINGTON, Texas — Former UT Arlington right-handed pitcher Cade Winquest made his Major League Baseball debut Saturday, throwing two scoreless innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Winquest entered in relief and retired all six batters he faced, including Bryan Reynolds for his first Major League strikeout. He did not allow a hit or run, walked one, and struck out two over two innings of work. Winquest threw 24 pitches, 16 for strikes, and recorded three groundouts.
The right-handed pitcher becomes the 13th Maverick (
Per Baseball Almanac) to reach the major leagues, adding another milestone to a professional career that began after his time at UT Arlington.
Winquest, 26, was originally selected by the Cardinals in the 8th round of the 2022 MLB Draft and made the Yankees' 2026 opening day roster before returning to St. Louis. His elite strikeout rate in the minors is 12.9 K/9 gives him high upside in a beleaguered Cardinals bullpen.
Winquest made 46 appearances over four seasons with the UTA baseball team from 2019-22. He struck out 155 batters in 160.2 innings pitched, while holding batters to a .258 average during his collegiate career.
