The University of Texas at Arlington softball players Katy Cox and Melanie Williams were named to the 2003 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South Region second team Wednesday. The south region consists of schools in the Southland, Atlantic Sun, Ohio Valley, Southeastern and Sun Belt Conferences.
Cox, a pitcher from Haltom City, owns a 27-6 overall record and a 1.27 earned run average in 225 1/3 innings of work. She was UTA's starting pitcher in 34 of her 37 appearances in 2003. The junior is already the school's all-time strikeout leader, and was named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year this season after leading the Lady Mavericks to the Southland Conference championship.
Williams was one of the team's top offensive players, leading the Lady Mavericks with a .395 batting average. The outfielder was an All-Southland Conference performer as a senior, and was also named to the Academic All-Region Team earlier in the spring.
Texas-Arlington plays Florida State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, May 15. The Lady Mavericks own a 39-15 overall record and are making their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
