FORMER UTA BASEBALL PLAYER DANIEL ORTMEIER NAMED TEAM MVP

Aug. 29, 2003

ARLINGTON, Texas - Former Texas-Arlington baseball standout Daniel Ortmeier has been honored as the 2003 San Jose Giants "Vic Corsiglia/Club One MVP," as voted on by the Giants fans and staff, and Offensive Player of the Year. The San Jose Giants are the Class AA affiliate of the San Francisco Giants and play in the California League. Ortmeier was honored as the Offensive POY before the team's August 21 home game and was named the team MVP prior to the team's final home game of the season on August 27.

Ortmeier earned these awards by establishing himself as one of the top offensive players in the league. He leads the team with a .304 average, 31 doubles, a .379 on-base percentage and a .462 slugging percentage. He is also among the team leaders in numerous other categories as he is third in runs scored with 57, fourth in RBI with 53 and fifth in home runs (7) and stolen bases (11).

The Highland Village native was selected in the third round of the 2002 June draft and began the 2003 season as the team's designated hitter as he continued to recover from off-season surgery. After putting up respectable numbers over the season's first two months, Ortmeier found his groove during the month of June and posted a .411 AVG with 13 runs scored, nine doubles and 11 RBI. Earlier in the season, Ortmeier was honored as the Howe Sports Data California League Batter of the Week for the week of May 12-18, when he hit .414 with four doubles, one home run and seven RBI over a seven game span.
