ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington has named UTA alum Kaleb Canales as its newest assistant coach. The announcement was made today by head coach Eddie McCarter and director of intercollegiate athletics Pete Carlon. Canales was a student assistant with the Mavericks from 1999 until 2001 while pursuing his degree.
"I am very excited to have Kaleb join our staff, he brings a lot of experience and will do good things for our program," said McCarter.
Prior to joining the Mavericks, Canales was the head junior varsity coach, and an assistant on the varsity staff, with a United High School squad that reached the regional semifinals in 2003. He has also served as an instructor at numerous basketball camps including UTA, Stanford University High, AAU Basketball Clinic and Fred Summer's Two-Star Basketball Camp.
Canales earned a Kinesiology degree from UTA in 2001, and went on to coach and teach at Raymond & Tirza High School in Laredo. He served as the head junior varsity coach, while also serving as an assistant for the varsity squad.
Canales joins a Maverick staff that includes McCarter, who is beginning his 12th year at UTA; sixth year assistant coach Scott Cross; and second year assistant coach Reggie Brown.
