AUSTIN, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks earned a much needed win Friday evening as they rolled to a three-game sweep (30-15, 30-16, 30-20) of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in their final match of the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational in Austin. With the win, UTA improved to 2-6.
The Mavericks jumped behind an 8-1 run to open the match and cruise to a 30-15 game one victory. Junior Caley Smith led UTA with four kills, while seniors Melissa Robinett and Elizabeth Davis chipped in with three.
Game two resembled the opener as the Mavericks, fueled by three service aces from senior Julie Felts, strung together nine consecutive points right out of the gate. The Islanders climbed within nine at 15-6, but couldn't come any closer as UTA put the game away, 30-16.
The third game started out quite slower than the previous two as the Mavericks found themselves in a battle with the Islanders. Although UTA never fell behind after trailing 2-1, TAMU-CC stayed on its heels before the Mavs finally pulled away. UTA slowly dismantled the Islanders defense, eventually putting them away 30-20 and winning the match.
Felts finished the match with five aces, a new career best for the senior. Robinett led the offense with 11 kills, while Davis put down 10. UTA out hit the Islanders 49-22 in the match, as the Mavericks hit a season high .333.
Texas-Arlington returns to Texas Hall on Tuesday, September 16 when Southland Conferene rival Stephen F. Austin visits Arlington for the league opener. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
