STEPHENVILLE, Texas — UT Arlington lost to Tarleton State, 3-1 on Tuesday, falling 15-25, 25-23, 16-25, 22-25 at Wisdom Gym. UTA drops to a 6-7 overall record and 0-1 in UAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tarleton State scored the first seven points of the opening set behind kills from Onita Davis, Alyssa Dinh and Madison Natori Rice-Locket before
Evyn Snook put UTA on the board with a kill. The home side pushed the lead to 12-2, and although Snook and
Mazi Smith supplied kills for UTA through the middle of the set, Tarleton St. kept the margin at 19-8. UTA answered with four straight points, using a
Hana Aiana kill, an
Emilee Sikora kill and blocks involving
Camryn McMinn and Aiana to get within 19-12, but TSU reached 24-14 on kills by Breannah Peterson and Natori Rice-Locket before closing the set 25-15.
After the teams traded early points, Tarleton State ran off five straight to move ahead 8-3, with Leddy Rae Guinn serving two aces during that stretch. The Mavericks worked back to 9-8 behind a
Camryn McMinn kill,
Hana Aiana ace and a block by McMinn and
Dixie Nessl, then erased a 12-10 deficit with
Evyn Snook's kill and a block by Sikora and Nessl before moving in front 13-12. That was part of a seven-of-eight stretch that also included a Sikora kill, a Smith kill and consecutive
Samantha Glenn aces to build a 17-13 lead, and Snook later put UTA ahead 23-19 with another kill. The Texans closed to 23-22 and again to 24-23 after Snook put UTA at set point, but a Texans' service error ended the set 25-23 for the Mavericks.
After Sikora's opening kill gave UTA the first point, Tarleton State answered with seven straight points behind Alyssa Dinh's offense and blocks involving Dinh and Breannah Peterson to move ahead 8-1. UTA later put together a four-point stretch from 14-5 to 14-9, getting kills from Smith and Sikora before a service ace during
Evyn Snook's turn at the line. Tarleton State kept the margin in place with kills from Dinh, LaNeah Lara and Madison Frank, then pushed from 20-14 to 23-14 with a Frank kill and a block by Frank and Madison Natori Rice-Locket. After Snook's kill held off one set point at 24-16, Natori Rice-Locket and Dinh combined on the closing block to give the Texans the set, 25-16.
After TSU built a 5-2 lead,
Camryn McMinn put down a kill and served consecutive aces to pull UT Arlington even at 5-5. Tarleton St. moved back ahead 11-9, but a service error,
Samantha Glenn's ace, a block by McMinn and
Hana Aiana and another Glenn ace pushed UT Arlington in front 13-11 before Smith's kill made it 14-12. The set stayed level through ties at 14-14, 16-16, 17-17, 18-18, 19-19 and 20-20, with UT Arlington going back in front on kills from McMinn and
Evyn Snook during that stretch. Tarleton St. took four of five points to move ahead 24-21, and after a Texans' attack error kept UT Arlington in the set, an attack error from UTA closed Tarleton State's 25-22 set win.
