ARLINGTON, Texas - A Jan. 2, 2004, matchup with NCAA Final Four participant Texas highlights the 2003-04 Texas-Arlington men's basketball schedule, released today.
The Mavericks cap off a tough non-conference schedule that includes road games at Texas Christian University, New Mexico State, Wichita State and a trip to the South Florida Tournament.
"We look to play a non-conference schedule that will prepare us for the Southland Conference season and I think we have done that," said men's basketball coach Eddie McCarter, beginning his twelfth season at UTA.
Texas returns four starters off a squad that finished 26-7 and advanced to the Final Four before losing to eventual national champion Syracuse.
The season begins Nov. 10 with an exhibition game against Houston Elite.
The regular season starts off with a trip to Daniel Meyer Coliseum to meets TCU at 7 p.m. Two nights later, UTA travels to Las Cruces, N.M. to face 20-game winner New Mexico State, a 2003 NIT participant. The home opener is Dec. 3 against Texas Wesleyan.
The Southland Conference opener is Jan. 8 when the Mavericks host Louisiana-Monroe at Texas Hall at 8 p.m. This will mark the beginning of a 16-game conference schedule as opposed to 20 games in previous seasons.
Conference home games include: Louisiana-Monroe (Jan. 8), Texas-San Antonio (Jan. 10), McNeese State (Jan. 17), Nicholls State (Jan. 29), Southeastern Louisiana (Feb. 7), Stephen F. Austin (Feb. 14) and Texas State (Feb. 21).
The Southland Conference Postseason Tournament is March 8-12 at home sites with the top eight teams competing for the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Texas-Arlington returns three starters off a 16-13 squad that finished fourth in the SLC (13-7) including senior forward Roy Johnson (Houston, Texas) who averaged 11.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last season.
