HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Sam Houston State's Alisha Fowler, Chrissy Engle and Jennifer Henrichsen combined for 67 kills as the Bearkats rallied past Texas-Arlington in a Southland Conference volleyball match, 30-20, 28-30, 26-30, 35-37, Tuesday evening in Huntsville.
The Bearkats improve to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the SLC while the Mavericks fall to 13-3 and 5-2 in the league.
Ashley Van Antwerp led the Mavericks with four kills in game one as UTA cruised to a 30-20 victory.
The Bearkats turned the tables in game two as they edged past the Mavericks 30-28. The'Kats used six kills each from Chrissy Engle and Alisha Fowler to put the Mavs away.
UTAcontinued tostrugglein game three, hitting just .176. The Mavericks led by as many as four twice, but the 'Kats climbed back for a 30-26 win and a two games to one lead heading into the locker room.
The squads see-sawed in game four with neither team leading by more than two until a Torie Dacus kill put the Mavs in front 25-21. Sam Houston took a 28-27 leadon back-to-back kills fromHenrichson. After more than ten game-points the 'Kats, they finally put the game away 37-35.
Freshman Morgan Rogers led the defensive charge for the Mavericks recording a career-high 37 digs, the third best dig total in UTA history. Joining her in double digits was Dacus (23), Caley Smith (22), Van Antwerp (19), Ashley Smith (16) and Heather Dunn (14). Van Antwerp (21)paced the Mavs at the net for the third straight match while Rogers chipped in 13 and Caley Smith contributed 10.
Texas-Arlington will continue SLC play this weekend as it travels to Louisiana to face Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana. Friday's match in Thibodaux is set for 7 p.m. while Saturday's affair with the Lady Lions is slated for 4 p.m.
