ARLINGTON, Texas - Senior Caley Smith recorded a match-high 17 kills in 25 errorless swings for a career high .680 hitting percentage as Texas-Arlington swept Sam Houston State, 30-23, 30-26, 30-19 in Southland Conference volleyball action here Tuesday.
The Mavericks improve to 21-4 overall and 13-3 in the league.
UTA trailed early in game one, falling behind 8-11 before climbing back to take the lead for good 13-12 on a Smith kill. The Mavs closed out the game with a 5-0 run for the 30-23 win.
The Mavs jumped to an early seven point lead in game two but the 'Kats scratched back to tie the game at 17-all. Sam Houston State never could take the lead as UTA rallied behind the arms of Smith and Ashley Van Antwerp who combined for 13 kills in the game.
UTA cruised in game three opening with six unanswered points. The Mavericks used a balanced attack in the third game with each starter contributing to the offense.
Smith completed the double-double with a team best 14 digs. Joining Smith in double digits was Heather Dunn and Van Antwerp with 13 apiece while libero Ashley Smith chipped in 11. Dunn also handed out 39 assists in the match to complete her 15th digs/assists double-double.
Alisha Fowler paced the Bearkats with 16 kills.
Texas-Arlington will return to action when it heads to Stephen F. Austin Friday evening at 7 p.m. in Nacogdoches.
