LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Texas at Arlington women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season as UNLV took care of the Lady Mavs 79-57 in the opening round of the Lady Rebel Shootout.
Ashley Bobb scored the first six point of the game for UTA and the game was tied 6-6 with 16:27 to go in the half. The Lady Mavs would go scoreless over the next 3:27 with the Lady Rebels going on a 10-0 run over that span. Back-to-back three-point plays by Nikki Hitchens and RanDee Henry sparked the rally.
UNLV (2-2) went 15-for-27 (.556) in the first half and pushed its lead to 19 points at 37-18 at the 3:3 mark on a Henry layup. UTA would get a three-point play from Maryann Abanobi and a nice driving layup by Tabitha Wesley to close out the first half with the Lady Mavs trailing 41-26.
UTA (2-1) was its own worst nightmare in the first half as it shot just 9-for-34 (.265) from the field in the first half and missed numerous inside shots.
The Lady Rebels came out in the second half and quickly pushed its lead to 22 points as Sheena Moore scored five quick points and Sequoia Holmes and Hitchens hit back-to-back buckets.
UTA would trim the lead to 19 points in the second half as they went on a mini 6-0 run with three-straight baskets from Bobb, Rola Ogunoye and Tabitha Wesley. Wesley would add a three-point play late in the second half and Maryann Abanobi would hit a shot to cut the deficit to 18 points before the final margin of 22 points.
Terra Wallace led four Lady Mavs in double figures with 13 points. She was joined by Bobb with 12 points, Rola Ogunoye 11 and Wesley 10. Moore led UNLV with 18 points. Henry added 15 points and Holmes 13 in the victory.
The Lady Mavs return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Villanova in the consolation game of the Lady Rebel Shootout. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CST at the Cox Pavilion.
