UTA freshman pitcher Lauren Hebert tossed a one-hitter and the Lady Mavs made a Dee Jay Nelson RBI single hold up as they defeated Texas State 1-0 to complete a doubleheader sweep of the league-leading Bobcats at Allan Saxe Field Sunday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, sophomore pitcher Jill Garro tossed a five-hit shutout in a 2-0 win. UTA (24-22-1, 15-10)climbed above .500 for the first time this season while Texas State (36-18, 19-7) dropped its ninth straight game. The losses drop Texas State into second place behind Texas-San Antonio. The Roadrunners face McNeese State in a triple header Monday in Lake Charles, La. UTSA can claim the league's regular season crown by winning two of three games on Monday.
Nelson's one-out single to center field scored Amanda Haney from third for the game's only run in the second inning.
Hebert overcame five walks to post her second shutout of the season. She got out of a tense fourth inning by striking out Ashley Wilson with Bobcat's Hannah Snow at third and Rachel BOnnetti at second base. Both reached on back-to-back walks with two outs and then a double steal put them in scoring position.
Texas State's Jennelle Wolter reached second base in the sixth inning, but Snow struck out looking to end the threat.
In game one, senior April Jones, playing her final home game of her career, hit her fourth career extra base hit for the game-winning run in the second inning.
