
LADY MAVS TENNIS CAPTURES TOURNAMENT CROWN

LAKE CHARLES, La. - Regular season champion and top-seeded Texas-Arlington breezed through the Southland Conference women's tennis postseason tournament, sweeping each of its opponents on the way to its fourth tournament title. The Lady Mavericks dropped host and third-seeded McNeese State 4-0 Monday afternoon in the championship match. UTA captured the top seed in the tournament after completing league play with a perfect 10-0 mark and its all-time fifth regular season title.
UTA went to work early, earning the first team point after wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Anete Rozkalne and Jitka Vetrovcova completed the first victory for UTA with an 8-1 win over Yolandie Beukes and Madeleine Hakansson at No. 3 singles. Monika Peciulionyte and Simri van Rooyen secured the doubles point after dropping Urska Dobersek and Magali Risoleo 8-4 at the No. 2 position. The top doubles flight did not finish.
Van Rooyen gave the Lady Mavs a 2-0 advantage after dropping Dobersek in straight sets at No. 4 singles. Daniela Novakova, the 2004 SLC freshman of the year, followed with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Beukes at the No. 3 position and senior Marketa Cizova secured the win for UTA with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles.
UTA will have three full weeks to prepare for the NCAA tournament before regional play begins May 14-16 at campus sites yet to be determined. The Lady Mavericks first round opponent will also be determined at a later date.
