The University of Texas at Arlington men's basketball coach Eddie McCarter added backcourt help to the Class of 2004 with the signing of Baron Sauls and Rodrick Epps to letters of intent recently.
Sauls joins former Alief Elsik H.S. teammate Myles Guidry after averaging 17.0 points and 3.1 steals per game for the Rams last season. He was named to the all-Greater Houston second-team and was first-team all-District 19-5A. Sauls was named the Elsik H.S. "Team MVP" and the best offensive and defensive player. He was selected to participate in the Greater Houston Coaches Association All-Star Game and the Space City Classic All-Star Game.
He scored a career-high 33 points against Houston Wheatley on Dec. 12, 2003 and was named to the all-tournament team of the Outback Invitational the following day. He was also named to the all-tournament team of the Schertz Clemens Tourney and the Texas Invitational.
Epps averaged 12.6 points, 6.8 assists and 2.9 steals per game for a Lake Highlands squad that finished 23-10 and advanced to the Class 5A Region II semifinals. Ranked the 39th best player in Texas according to Mike Kunstadt's Texas Basketball Review, Epps was named first-team all-District 9-5A and first-team all-city after ranking fourth in the Dallas area in assists.
Both were added after the NCAA eliminated its "5-in-8" rule that prohibited men's basketball program from signing more than five players in one season and eight in two seasons.
Epps and Sauls join a class that includes Jermaine Griffin, a 6-foot-8 forward from Houston Sterling H.S., Guidry, a 6-foot-4, forward from Alief Elsik and Larry Posey, a 6-foot-5 forward from Houston Milby H.S. David Farmer, an early signee from Lewisville Hebron H.S. will attend Howard College in Big Spring, Texas instead.
