CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior transfer Jeff Murray (Odessa, Texas) fired rounds of 69 and 70 to lead the University of Texas at Arlington to a second place finish after the opening day of the 2004 NIKE/Northwest Collegiate Classic here Monday.
The final 18 holes of the 54-hole event concludes Tuesday on the Trysting Tree Golf Course on the campus of Oregon State University.
Host Oregon State leads the 13-team field with a 36-hole total of 555. UTA recorded the second lowest round of the afternoon round with a five-under-par 283 to vault into second place at 569.
UTA shot an opening round of two-under-par 286 to stand in a fifth-place tie after the morning round. Ideal conditions in the morning led to 36 golfers shooting par or better.
"I thought we did a good job of saving some shots when we missed a green," said UTA Head Golf Coach Jay Rees, now in his sixth season. "We've got a good group of guys and good chemistry on this team. We'll rest up tonight and se what we can do tomorrow."
The round of 283 ties for the ninth lowest round in program history.
Murray, a member of the 2003 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship team at Odessa College, trails medalist leader Jonathan Green of Oregon who sits at 135 after rounds of 65 and 70 on opening day.
