SAN MARCOS, Texas - Ashley Van Antwerp and Morgan Rogers combined for 29 kills as Texas-Arlington handed the Texas State Bobcats a 3-0 (30-25, 30-27, 30-26) loss Tuesday evening in the Southland Conference opener for both squads. With the win, the Mavericks set the best starting mark in school history as they improve to 9-1 overall.
Texas State falls to 5-3 with the loss.
The Mavericks hit a season high .347 in the match.
Senior Caley Smith used 10 kills to break into the top ten on UTA's career kill list. Smith ties Shari Parks, holding the ten spot, collecting 1,148 total kills.
UTA used a .375 attack percentage to push to a 30-25 victory in game one. The Mavericks took the lead for good at 18-17 behind a Smith block.
The Mavs controlled game two early before the 'Cats used a 4-0 run to pull within two at 26-28. UTA closed out the game with kills from Morgan Rogers and Smith for the 30-27 victory and a two games to none lead heading into the locker room.
UTA used a 6-0 run capped by a Torie Dacus service ace to push to a 17-12 lead, its largest of the game. The 'Cats scratched back using a 4-0 run of their own to pull within three but the Mavs pushed on for a 30-27 win on an Ashley Van Antwerp kill.
Van Antwerp paced the Mavericks at the net with a match-high 17 kills while Rogers followed with 12 and Smith chipped in 10. Van Antwerp and Rogers led the defensive efforts with 14 digs apiece. Smith (13) and Dunn (11) also finished in double figures.
Texas-Arlington will continue league play this weekend when it plays host to Northwestern State and Louisiana-Monroe at Texas Hall. Friday's match is set for 7 p.m. while Saturday's first serve is slated for 4 p.m.
