ARLINGTON, Texas - Freshman outside hitter Morgan Rogers (Tomball, Texas) tallied a match-high 16 kills to lead Texas-Arlington to a 3-0 win (30-14, 30-14, 30-25) over Louisiana-Monroe in Southland Conference volleyball action at Texas Hall Saturday afternoon.
The win keeps UTA (11-1, 3-0) undefeated in league play while ULM falls to 4-6, 0-2. The win also equals UTA's best start in school history through 12 matches set by the 1985 squad that advanced to the NCAA regional tournament.
UTA shook off a lackluster 3-1 win over Northwestern State Friday and looked crisp in game one. UTA led 17-4 after a Rogers' kill midway through the game. For the game, UTA connected on 19 of 35 attack attempts for a .429 percentage while ULM made nine hitting errors for a .000.
In game two, Caley Smith (Alvin, Texas) banged home a kill to begin a 6-0 run and give UTA an 11-4 lead before a ULM timeout. Junior hitter Ashley Van Antwerp (Colleyville, Texas), who finished with 10 kills, drove a kill down the left side for a 15-6 edge. The lead swelled to 11, 20-9, after a Heather Dunn (Arlington, Texas) ace. Back-to-back errors by the Lady Indians gave UTA its largest lead of the game, 25-11, before another ULM timeout. UTA hit a season-high .440 percentage (12 of 25, one error).
ULM battled in game three, rallying from a 5-1 deficit to take a 12-9 lead. UTA responded with a 5-1 run to take a 14-12 lead after a Van Antwerp kill. Van Antwerp banged home another Dunn assist for a 19-15 lead en route to the win
UTA begins a weekend road trip Friday at McNeese State at 7 p.m.
NOTES: Caley Smith, who moved into moved into 10th place on the all-time kills list at UTA with 16 kills Friday against Northwestern State, needs 112 kills to pass Fannie Burton (1991-94) into ninth place.
