Buffalo, N.Y. - Caley Smith and Ashley Van Antwerp combined for 34 kills as The University of Texas at Arlington handed Binghamton a four-game loss at Canisius College Sunday morning. Game scores in the match were 30-22, 28-30, 30-23 and 30-27 as the Mavericks improved to 5-0 on the season.
Three Mavericks took control of game one behind four kills from Caley Smith and three apiece from Heather Dunn and Ashley Van Antwerp. UTA ammassed a .462 hitting clip compared to the Bearcats .162.
In game two, Binghamton took an early lead behind the seven kills from Anne Crocus. The Bearcats pushed ahead by as many as five at 12-7 but UTA kept scratching its way back. A Smith and Dunn block pulled the Mavs within one at 14-15, but BU held on extending its lead up to two. A Bearcat setting error tied the score at 19 and the teams traded leads from that point on. UTA pulled ahead 24-21 after three straight kills from Smith, but the Mavericks couln't hold on as Binghamton tied the match at one game a piece with a 30-28 victory.
UTA fell behind early in game three after Binghamton opened with five straight points. Morgan Rogers pulled the Mavs within one at 5-6 with a kill down the line, but a 4-0 Bearcat run gave BU a six point advantage. The Maveircks capitalized on two Binghamton errors and kills from Smith and Van Antwerp to tie the game at 10. The squads continued to trade leads with neither squad leading by more than two until UTA claimed a 24-19 lead on a Bearcat setting error. BU climbed back within two but couldn't come any closer as UTA put the game away, 30-23.
Rogers and Torie Dacus carried the Mavs defensive efforts in game three with seven and six digs, respectively.
The Mavericks looked better in game four opening up a five point lead and fighting off a scrappy Bearcat squad. However, BU did manage to cut into the Mavs lead late in the game, pulling within one at 25-26 but the Mavericks pushed ahead to win 30-27.
Smith paced the Mavericks offense with a season high 20 kills while Van Antwerp and Rogers chipped in with 14 and 10, respectively. Leading the defensive effort was Rogers with (19), followed by Dacus (16), Smith (12), Van Antwerp (11) and Dunn (10).
Texas-Arlington will returns home to host the UTA Invitational this weekend, September 10-11, at Texas Hall. The Mavericks will kick off the tournament Friday with an 11 a.m. match against Houston.
