ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington women's basketball team won its 11th straight game at Texas Hall as the team held its 10th opponent in the last 14 games to 50-points or less with a 58-44 victory over Louisiana-Monroe Saturday afternoon.
Rola Ogunoye led the offensive attack for the Mavs as the senior scored 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. She also added six rebounds, two blocks and four steals.
Both teams started the game hitting on all cylinders as the team's combined to hit eight of the first nine shots of the game. The Lady Indians connected on their first five and held a 12-8 advantage at the first media timeout.
ULM (9-7, 2-3 SLC) hit a free throw out of the timeout and held a five-point advantage before the Mavs would go on an 8-0 run to take the lead for good. Ogunoye started the run with a free throw and Terra Wallace followed it up with a three-pointer. Tabitha Wesley then hit her only shot of the game on a driving layup near the end of the shot clock and Tojjinay Thompson capped the run with a jumper.
The Lady Indians would get a free throw from Jamie Brown before the UTA defense would shut them down holding them scoreless the next 4:12. The Mavs held ULM to just two field goals over an 11:10 span in helping turn the deficit into a four point lead.
UTA (11-6, 6-0 SLC) would allow ULM to within two points, before Ashley Bobb scored four points and Maryann Abanobi contributed a basket to send the team's to intermission with UTA ahead 30-25
The Mavs did not waste any time in the second half in pushing its lead to double figures as Bobb hit a three-pointer to put the team up 11 points with 13:20 remaining. Ogunoye would push the advantage as she would steal the ball at midcourt and go coast-to-coast for the layup.
A balanced attack throughout the remainder of the game would help to keep the lead in double figures over the final 10 minutes. With the team up 10 and 6:29 showing on the clock, senior point guard Krystal Buchanan watched the shot clock wind down and hit a long three-pointer to put the team up 49-36.
UTA would push the lead to 15 points late in the game on a pair of Ogunoye free throws before Buchanan hit another shot clock beater from about 25-feet to seal the deal and give UTA its largest lead of the day at 58-40.
Ogunoye was joined in double figures on a perfect shooting night from Buchanan who had 13 points on 4-of-4 from the field, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc, and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Bobb added nine points and team-high seven rebounds. Terra Wallace was held under double figures for just the second time this season with nine points. Nine Randle led ULM with 11 points.
The Mavs return to action on Jan. 25 when its hosts Stephen F. Austin at 5:45 p.m. at Texas Hall.
