NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Texas-Arlington volleyball team dropped its fifth straight match, falling to Northwestern State, 30-15, 30-24, 33-31, Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference play at Prather Coliseum.
In game one, the Mavericks (2-11, 0-4 SLC) got off to yet another rough start, falling behind 16-9. Northwestern State (4-7, 3-2 SLC) finished off the game with a 14-6 run led by four kills from Shannon Puder.
Game two saw both teams trade points until the Lady Demons took control at 13-12. They went on an 8-1 run, led by Puder who had three more kills during the stretch to make it 21-13. The Mavericks fought back using an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 23-21. Junior Ashley Smith who started game two as the setter, registered two kills to help the cause. The Lady Demons used a 7-3 run to end the threat and take the second game, 30-24.
In game three, Texas-Arlington raced to a 15-11 lead on the strength of three kills by sophomore Torie Dacus. Northwestern State used a 12-9 run to bring the score to 24-23 in favor of the Mavericks. The Lady Demons fought off four game points by Texas-Arlington and finished off the victory with a block by Janel Fisher and Priscila Augusto.
Senior Ashley Van Antwerp led the Mavericks with 13 kills, while Smith dished out 19 assists. Dacus led Texas-Arlington with 15 digs and sophomore Dani Johnson added 13.
Augusto and Whitney King led the Lady Demons with 13 kills each. Flavio Belo had a game-high 51 assists and Rachel Ford led Northwestern State with 12 digs.
Texas-Arlington will continue next week with two more road matches. The Mavericks will travel to take on Southeastern Louisiana Friday evening at 6 p.m. and follow that up with a match versus Nicholls State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
