ARLINGTON, Texas - Senior Ashley Van Antwerp had 26 kills but Texas-Arlington fell to Texas State, 30-25, 20-30, 30-20, 30-23, Saturday evening in a Southland Conference matchup at Texas Hall.
Texas-Arlington (4-15, 2-8 SLC) jumped out to an early lead, 10-4, on the strength of three kills by Van Antwerp. Texas State (11-8, 9-2 SLC) fought back behind the play of Elizabeth Nwoke to take game one, 30-25.
Game two saw the Mavericks race out to a 17-3 lead. Van Antwerp had five kills and six team blocks during the stretch. The Bobcats made a game of it, going on a 16-7 run to make it 24-19, led by six kills from Nwoke. The Mavericks, however, won six of the last seven points to take game two, 30-20.
The Bobcats came out in games three and four and took care of business, winning both by a score of 30-25. Texas State had a team hitting percentage of .400 in game four.
Maverick libero Ashley Smith led the team with 18 digs, while setter Emily Nedderman dished out 35 assists. Sophomore Torie Dacus had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.
Nwoke led Texas State with 18 kills to go along with her 15 digs, while libero Amy Ramirez had a game-high 21 digs. Setter Erin Hickman dished out 65 assists to led all players.
Texas-Arlington will be back in action Tuesday when it travels to take on McNeese State at 7 p.m. in Lake Charles, La. The Cowgirls defeated the Mavericks, 3-0 on Oct. 15th earlier this season.
