HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Texas-Arlington volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Sam Houston State Friday evening at Johnson Coliseum, but the match was closer than appeared.
In game one, Sam Houston State (14-9, 12-2 SLC) raced to an early lead and never looked back, dominating the game, 30-19.
Game two saw the Mavericks (4-17, 2-10 SLC) take the Bearkats the distance, 30-28, but come up short in the end. Texas-Arlington responded with a win in game four, 33-31, but Sam Houston State ended the match 34-32.
Even though the match only lasted four games, it took 2 hours and 11 minutes to complete.
Seniors Ashley Van Antwerp and Melissa Marek both led the Mavericks with 15 kills apiece, while sophomore Emily Nedderman dished out 46 assists. Junior Ashley Smith notched a career-high 36 digs and sophomore Torie Dacus chipped in with 17 of her own.
Alisha Fowler and Chrissy Engle both had 21 kills for Sam Houston State and Megan McNamara had a game-high 72 assists. Libero Jennifer Henrichson tallied 26 digs while Rhae Walderman added 19.
The Bearkats outhit the Mavericks, .202 to .198.
Texas-Arlington will be back in action tomorrow, when they travel to take on conference-leader Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
