ARLINGTON, Texas - In game of ups and downs, the Texas-Arlington volleyball team fell to a determined La.-Monroe team, 30-25, 27-30, 20-30, 30-28, 16-14, Friday evening at Texas Hall.

In the fifth game with the score tied, 12-12. Eveta Gambrah tallied a service ace and senior Ashley Van Antwerp provided an attack error that gave the Lady Indians a 14-12 lead. The Mavericks fought off two match points with a kill from Van Antwerp and an attack error by ULM's Megan Gloor to tie the score, 14-14. However, Van Antwerp had another attack error and Brittany Winters finished off the Mavericks with a kill, 16-14.

The Mavericks have to win their four remaining matches to have a chance at the SLC Conference Tournament that they are hosting November 18-20.

La.-Monroe (14-13, 7-8 SLC) raced out to a 19-9 lead in game one on the strength of four kills from Winters. Texas-Arlington (4-19, 2-12 SLC) came storming back, using 13-3 run, keyed by senior Melissa Marek who had four kills. However, the Lady Indians closed the game out, using an 8-3 run to take a 1-0 lead in games with a 30-25 victory. Both Winters and Gloor had six kills each.

Game two saw the Mavericks jump out to a 20-15 lead, before La.-Monroe countered by winning the next four points to make the score 20-19. Four kills by Van Antwerp gave Texas-Arlington a 30-27 victory and knotted the score, 1-1.

In game three, the Mavericks and Lady Indians were tied at 13-13, before sophomore Ellen Murray served nine straight times, giving the home team a 21-14 lead. Two kills by Van Antwerp and an ace by junior Ashley Smith helped the Mavericks win game three, 30-20.

Texas-Arlington looked to have the match in hand, jumping out to a 10-2 lead led by two kills each from Murray and sophomore Emily Nedderman, but La.-Monroe fought back with a 26-18 run to even the score, 28-28. A ball handling error by Nedderman and a kill by Gloor gave the Lady Indians game four and sent the match into a deciding game five.

Van Antwerp led the Mavericks with 19 kills and also produced 21 digs, while sophomore Dani Johnson also had a double-double with 14 kills and 21 digs. Nedderman dished out a career-high 64 assists to go along with her 13 digs. Smith tied her career-high with 36 digs and Marek, Murray and Kalb rounded out the scoring with 16, 13 and 11 kills respectively.

Gloor led the Lady Indians with 23 kills and 25 digs, while Darci Mika dished out a match-high 68 assists. Libero Sei Hee Hwang tallied 31 digs and Winters added 18 kills.

Texas-Arlington will be back in action tommorow afternoon when they host Northwestern State in a must-win match at Texas Hall. First-serve is set for 4 p.m.
