NACOGDOCHES, Texas — UT Arlington lost to SFA 3-0 on Saturday at Shelton Gym, falling by set scores of 18-25, 21-25 and 23-25. UTA finished with 43 kills and 43 digs, while SFA hit .308 and recorded four service aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UT Arlington scored the first point of the opening set on a block by
Lucy Tricco and
Sophia Krichev, but SFA moved in front 6-3 behind two Kennedy Jones kills and a block by Molly Cravens and Katherine Holtman. Aniston Collins served consecutive aces to push SFA to 9-4, and after the home side reached 11-6, the Mavericks used kills from
Sophia Krichev and SFA attack errors to close within 11-10. SFA kept the lead from there, and a four-point stretch featuring kills by Kennedy Jones and Jordan Henderson and two UTA attack errors made it 19-13. UTA got late kills from
Sophia Krichev and
Camryn McMinn to reach 18-23, but SFA closed the set on Avery Koonsen's kill and a block by Kennedy Jones and Molly Cravens for a 25-18 finish.
UTA traded points with SFA through a 4-4 start, getting kills from
Sophia Krichev and
Camryn McMinn and blocks involving Krichev, McMinn,
Hana Aiana and
Mazi Smith. SFA moved in front 10-6 behind kills from Lara Gilardi and Avery Koonsen, but UTA cut it to 13-11 after McMinn's kill, a Kennedy Jones service error and a Katherine Holtman attack error. After SFA reached 19-15 on a Jones kill and a Maverick setting error,
Emilee Sikora's kill and Tricco's ace brought UTA within 19-17. SFA answered with a Jordan Henderson kill and consecutive Jones aces to go ahead 22-17, then finished the set 25-21 after late UTA points from a Smith-Aiana block, Smith,
Evyn Snook and an Avery Koonsen attack error.
UTA pushed ahead 10-6 in the third set when Smith recorded kills for 8-6 and 10-6 and joined
Sophia Krichev on a block in between. SFA answered with four straight points to tie the set at 10-10, and after kills by Smith,
Evyn Snook and Sikora helped the Mavericks keep the score level through 13-13, SFA moved in front 18-16 on a stretch that included kills by Kennedy Jones, Jordan Henderson and Avery Koonsen. UTA stayed close with kills from Krichev,
Camryn McMinn and Smith, and an SFA attack error made it 23-22 after Jones had put SFA ahead 23-21. A kill from Katherine Holtman gave SFA set point at 24-22, Snook answered from
Camryn McMinn to cut it to 24-23, and Henderson's kill closed the set 25-23 for SFA.

UTA will travel to Lafayette, La. next Friday, Sept. 18, for the Ragin' Cajuns Classic, UTA will open the tournament with a Friday doubleheader against Jackson State at 11 a.m. and host Louisiana at 6 p.m. The Mavericks will close out the tournament against Mississippi State at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19.
