MAVERICKS BULLY TOREROS, 94-91 IN OVERTIME

Dec. 17, 2005

Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior Jarrett Howell scored five points with some timely free-throws down the stretch in the extra period for a team-high 17 points to lead Texas-Arlington to a 94-91 overtime victory over San Diego Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Ahead 86-84 with 1:48 left in overtime, Texas-Arlington (5-5) got a layup from senior Steven Thomas and five free throws from Howell to put an end to San Diego's six-game winning streak.

"Jarrett is the guy we wanted at the line and he showed good leadership by knocking down the big shots," UTA head coach Eddie McCarter said. "He is one of our leaders on this team and he showed that this afternoon."

Thomas after limited scoring in the first two periods, responded with four points in overtime.

"Steven Thomas is not selfish and he kicked the ball out when they collapsed on him," McCarter said. "Everybody chipped in tonight and this was definitely a team victory."

In the second half, San Diego (7-3) opened on a 23-13 run over the first 13 minutes of the half. Ross DeRogatis led the way seven points during the stretch to give the Toreros their biggest lead, 61-53, with 7:52 left in the ballgame.

The Mavericks fought back, using a 14-2 run over the next four minutes to retake the lead, 67-63, with 3:50 remaining in the game. Sophomore Rodrick Epps was a key part of that run with seven points off of the bench, while freshman Brandon Long added to treys.

With Texas-Arlington holding a 77-73 lead with 25 seconds remaining, the Toreros got two free throws each from freshmen Gyno Pomero and Brandon Johnson to tie the game. Senior Brady Dawkins three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed off and sent the game into an extra frame.

Howell led all Maverick scorers with 17 points, which included 9-o-11 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Larry Posey added 13 points and eight rebounds off of the bench, and Long chipped in with 12 points, nailing three treys.

Nick Lewis led all scorers with 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Corey Belser added 17 points and seven rebounds.

Texas-Arlington shot a blistering 60 percent (35-58) from the field and 42 percent (5-12) from behind the arc. They also held a good-shooting team in the Toreros to 42 percent shooting, including only 25 percent (6-24) from downtown.

The Mavericks will be back in action Thursday when they host UT-Tyler. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. at Texas Hall. Texas-Arlington defeated the Patriots 95-81, last season in Arlington.
