The UTA men's golf team concluded the 2005 fall season ranked in the top 50 in three polls. Golfstat.com ranks the Mavs 37th while Golf World magazine has UTA 40th and Golf Week at 46th. The Mavericks received four votes in the Golf World men's Coaches' Poll.
UTA, ranked eighth in the NCAA South Central region, opened the season with a third-place tie at the NIKE/Northwest Collegiate Classic. The 54-hole total of 859 ties for the fifth-best tournament score in program history. UTA finished the fall season with four top five finishes in the five-tournament schedule. The Mavericks claimed second-place finishes in the final two tournaments of the fall season -- the Squire Creek Intercollegiate and the Herb Wimberly/NMSU Classic.
"I think we are fortunate to be ranked in the top 40 since we haven't won a tournament this season," said UTA Golf Coach Jay Rees. "We had a good fall season and I think we have positioned ourselves to have another good spring. If we can solidify our fifth spot on the roster, I think we will position ourselves to make another run at a conference championship."
After the Northwest Collegiate Classic, UTA tied for sixth at the Wolfpack Invitational in Reno, Nev., and tied for third at the Baylor Bear Invitational with a 299-289-288=866.
Sophomore Zack Reeves (Arlington, Texas) was named the Division I Player of the Week by Golf World for the week of Oct. 28, 2005, after winning his first tournament with a 67-74-70=211 at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate. He is currently ranked 16th in the nation by Golf Stat.com.
"Zack has elevated the level of his game and is one of the top golfers in Texas and is on pace to becoming an all-American."
Junior Ryan Zamorano (Dallas, Texas) averaged 73.33 during the fall and senior co-captain Tyrone Mordt (Johannesburg, South Africa) is shooting 72.13 per round.
"Ryan has come in here and shot better numbers than he has before," said Rees. "Tyrone could be an all-American if he comes in with a strong spring season. Jeff Murray (Odessa, Texas) has been as consistent as Zamorano this fall."
Murray, the 2005 SLC Newcomer of the Year, averaged 73.00 in five tournaments, including an eighth-place finish at the Baylor Invitational.
UTA returns to action Feb. 5-7, 2006, at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Verde Beach, Fla.
